Some pictures from october, from right before the first nocturnal frosts…/Een paar foto’s uit october, van vlak voor de eerste nachtvorst…

Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa), rabarber/rhubarb (Rheum rabarbarum), biet/beet (Beta vulgaris), wortel/carrot (Dauca carota) , jaltomato (Jaltomato procumbens), bladbroccoli/leaf-broccoli (Brassica oleracea) , amarant/amaranth (Amaranthus ssp.) , postelein/purslane (Portulaca oleracea), Courgette (Cucurbita pepo)

Ijsplant/Iceplant (Mesembryanthemum crystalinum) tastes like something in between sour-salty watermelon and iceberg lettuce…/smaakt als iets tussen zoutzure watermeloen en ijsbergsla

Epazote (Chenopodium ambrosioides)

Niet nader geïdentificeerde blad-broccoli/ An unidentified leaf-broccoli… (zie ook foto 1/see also picture 1)

  1. Lovely pictures; it makes a change to see a late harvest picture rather than the summer reds and yellows. I’m intrigued by the leaf broccoli; I thought at first it was kale but the leaves in your last picture are so smooth. Did you buy or receive the seed, or are they self seeded plants?

    I hope to grow several of the leafy things here (ice plant, amaranth, epazote) one day but I have a possibly irrational fear of solanum berries that aren’t tomatoes! Would be interesting to hear more about the jaltomato in another post perhaps?

      It looks more like a broccoli than like a kale, and its origin is a mystery. It appeared in a line of ‘seed leftover for salad’, which was a mix of several last bits of salad leaf mixes, amaranth, purslane and probably other stuff too. So I don’t know where it originally came from. The taste is not very strong but okay, and the leaves look good for decorating dishes…

      Maybe I should write about those jaltomato berries. They are okay and easy to grow, but not really worth a hype…
